The information in this book comes from years of personal experience, observation of clients, and research within the fitness industry, and I draw examples from each. I use many different psychological points of view to shed light on why some people succeed and others fail in their journeys - not only to better health and fitness but to their other life goals as well. I'm core fit describes more than a physical attribute; it is a general philosophy that I have about health and fitness, human nature, and critical thinking. But I didn't write this book simply to give people information. I hope to provoke questions about a broken model of “service” in the health and fitness industry.

I believe generally that people do not ask as many questions as they should, particularly when they can rely on a “professional” to tell them what or how to think or which ideas and solutions to consider. For instance, we accept as a given that a doctor prescribing medication is doing so in our best interest. We trust that the mechanic working on our car is not trying to rip us off for a few extra bucks. We take for granted that a gym-assigned personal trainer is dedicated to helping us meet and exceed our fitness goals. While there may be truth to these beliefs, there is greater truth in this: You will always be your own best advocate. No one else can be as dedicated, interested, and invested in your progress as you. So this book is written to awaken an awareness that will help you understand how to be your own “professional”- in the health and fitness industry and beyond. Taking a position of self-interest doesn't mean you have to be selfish in the way you think about promoting your own wellness and longevity; but on the other hand, displaying a little more selfishness when it comes to your own and your children’s health and fitness may not be such a bad idea,

The things that enhance or encourage longevity should normally be the things we protect the most, yet it seems we are protecting them less and less. We are expecting less and less. When we expect less from people who provide professional services, or from those we live with or date, work for or work with, they have no choice but to give us less. There was a time in the fitness industry when you could talk to a personal trainer who would have true knowledge and understanding of the field, and, more importantly, would have genuine interest in what you were trying to achieve. I do believe these types of people are still out there in the industry looking out for others, motivating people to do the right thing when it comes to their health and fitness. From my experience, however, I know that a large majority of the fitness industry couldn't care less about whether clients become healthy and fit. Personal trainers working within the industry – even the good ones - are often forced to put profits first, ahead of their clientele’s goals and needs. When you enter a gym or fitness facility, the owners are likely not concerned about whether you're going to reach your fitness goals; they are concerned about whether they're going to be able to draft your bank account for the next 12 months.

If you don’t show up, all the better for them. As a paying client of a fitness facility, you must understand you do not need this type of business as much as they need you. And you should act accordingly. This is what I mean by being a little more “selfish” about your health and fitness. After all it’s your money they are taking.

This attitude should extend beyond gyms and personal trainers to the rest of the “health” and “wellness” industry. Here too, from pharmaceuticals to packaged foods, we need to recognize that “the system” is designed to turn a profit, not to make you healthy or well necessarily. As a society, I believe we need to wake up and take a stand for what we know is right, but most of the time we choose to avert our eyes and pretend that there is no problem. We understand subconsciously that many of the foods we eat from the supermarkets are unhealthy for us. As a society, we are recognizing that the medicines we give to all our children have potential to cause more damage than good. We have to understand this in some manner as a collective.... 1. Never place hard stops on the number of repetitions while exercising. Train your mind and body to do a few more of everything. Becoming physically tired is only a mental illusion. Overcome the illusion by doing more than what you tell yourself you can do.
